The City of Bardstown has owned and operated an electric distribution system for its citizens since 1895. In the early days of electricity, the City Council decided that it was better for the town to own and control its utilities, rather than depend on outside corporations. The current Electric Department is comprised of a city electrical engineer, staff engineer, electric superintendent, and five electric line workers.

The Electric Department maintains miles of electric lines, which serve 4,600 residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Bardstown.
